Mastering the complexities of genetics and plant phenotypes (advanced cannabis cultivation) is essential for producing unique, high-quality strains involving the exploration and selective breeding of plants based on observable characteristics.
Some of these factors include:
Leading the cultivation team at Resinate, Brian explains, “The genotype represents the strain, such as Sour Deisel or Northern Lights, while each seed from this strain expresses itself differently, known as phenotypes.”Although the seeds share the same genetic background, their individual traits can vary significantly, much like siblings from the same parents.
This involves very close attention growing these seeds to observe their unique traits. Brian compares phenotypes to a lottery, saying, “Each seed is like a lottery ticket. While many may not meet desired traits, there’s always the potential for one exceptional seed.”
Phenotype hunting goes beyond a scientific exercise; it’s a quest for the ideal plant with desirable characteristics.“Pheno hunting is the process of germinating all seeds (including hundreds of seeds), growing them, and selecting those with the traits you’re seeking. It’s about discovering that perfect profile that will meet the desired criteria of aroma, potency, and growth characteristics. It’s about discovering that perfect mother plant,” Brian elaborates.
This process is crucial because each phenotype can significantly differ in attributes such as terpene profiles, potency, appearance, and medicinal benefits. For example, Brian notes, “Blue Dream (One of Resinate’s most notable successes under Brian’s leadership) may have various phenotypes with different effects. Some might lean more towards haze, while others might be more blueberry dominant.”

At Resinate, pheno hunting is an ongoing endeavor. “We are continuously germinating hundreds of new seeds and evaluating genetics. This commitment of Resinate has been integral to our process from the start,” Brian shares. Brain ensures that the consumer can expect consistent quality and effects from Resinate’s products, reinforcing the brand’s reputation for excellence. This ongoing effort ensures that Resinate’s strains are unique and proprietary, as Resinate do not use clones from external sources.
Currently, Resinate is developing their own unique phenotypes by crossing two strains from our own unique cultivar collection: Lemongrass Lomen and Cecil’s Green. This effort is being performed in collaboration with Boston Bob, a respected figure in the cannabis industry. Brian explains, “Boston Bob provided us with the original seeds, and we selected vigorous males to create these new crosses.”
Creating new phenotypes or phenotype hunt involves careful selection and breeding. For example, Cecil’s Green is a cross between OCD M15 and Fish Piss, the latter being a blend of Uncle John’s Cat Piss and Blowfish. Brian details this lineage, emphasizing the complexity and deliberate planning behind each cross.

Transitioning from pheno hunting to commercial production is a detailed process. Once a desirable plant is identified, clones are taken and preserved for future use. Brian describes this process: “We clone every seed we grow. When we find the ideal plant, we use its clones to grow a mother plant, which then produces enough clones for large-scale production.”
This method ensures consistency in the strain’s traits, allowing Resinate to offer high-quality cannabis products with reliable effects and characteristics.
Phenotype hunting is a vital aspect of cannabis cultivation. It’s a dedication to excellence and innovation in the cannabis industry, enabling growers to discover and propagate unique and desirable strains. Through continuous hunting, Resinate maintains a diverse and proprietary genetic library, ensuring their products meet the highest standards of quality and consistency for their customers. As Brian Kohl correctly summarizes, “Phenotype hunting is about finding that perfect seed. It’s a rigorous process, but the reward is a standout strain with traits that consumers love and trust.” For cannabis enthusiasts and cultivators alike, understanding and appreciating the art of phenotype hunting is key to exploring the full potential of cannabis genetics.
